In “For a Public 2,” Nathan Gibbs honors California’s diverse landscape and iconic identity through a powerful composition of bold imagery and symbolic color blocks. From towering redwoods and rugged Sierra peaks to surfers poised beside a crashing wave and the ever-watchful great white, this piece celebrates the state’s wild beauty and untamed energy. The California Republic bear strides forward beneath a radiating sunburst, anchoring the work in heritage while the silhouette of the state itself glows with promise and pride.
Gibbs blends contemporary surf art with a folk-modern aesthetic, creating a uniquely regional painting that resonates with collectors of California coastal art, outdoor lifestyle décor, and Americana expressionism.
The 'Destination Series' uses a quilt, color blocking look, and is done with paint and wood stain. This surf art was painted on wood originally, and depicts surf scenes from around the world. Some are often real, while others are made up from my mind. Let me know if you have any questions on the concept or meaning behind the surf art, I am always happy to discuss my inspirations with you!
