In “Aussie Champ,” Nathan Gibbs captures the raw kinetic energy of a surfer paddling into a dreamlike wave. Taken from a screen grab in the movie Big Wednesday, this is 'Jack Barlow' surfing Sunset Beach. The actual surfer is PT aka Peter Townend World Champ from Australia. A dynamic explosion of color trails behind the board, evoking speed, ocean spray, and the unseen rhythms of the sea. The composition is framed with a geometric grid of surf culture motifs—a longboard fin, a radiant sun, and bold blocks of oceanic blues, warm sands, and sunset oranges.
This mixed media piece channels both movement and meditation, symbolizing the quiet focus before the drop. Perfect for collectors of contemporary surf art and modern coastal interiors, “Momentum” blends abstract expression with visual storytelling rooted in Southern California surf heritage.
The 'Destination Series' uses a quilt, color blocking look, and is done with paint and wood stain. This surf art was painted on wood originally, and depicts surf scenes from around the world. Some are often real, while others are made up from my mind. Let me know if you have any questions on the concept or meaning behind the surf art, I am always happy to discuss my inspirations with you!
