If you're looking for a truly special piece to add to your collection, this is it. This hand built custom alaia by iconic Jon Wegener is made with paulownia (light wood) and Sequoia (dark wood). The Sequoia is estimated to be over 1000 years old.
Celebrate the roots of wave riding with this one-of-a-kind hand-painted surfboard honoring the legacy of Hawaiian surf culture. Created by California artist Nathan Gibbs, this original artwork is more than decor—it’s a tribute to the pioneers of surfing and the islands that gave the sport its soul.
The board features a vibrant visual timeline of surfing’s evolution in Hawaii, layered with bold colors, vintage surf references, and symbolic elements that speak to both tradition and modern stoke. From ancient aliʻi riding wooden olo boards to the explosion of surf culture in the 20th century, this piece captures the rhythm, reverence, and rebellion of the Hawaiian wave-riding spirit. It features, Gerry Lopez at Pipeline, Da Hui symbol in the flag, Duke Kahanamoku is presented as an anchor of Hawaiian surf history, and King Kamahameha holding the islands are some of the features. The ribbon names many of the important surfers in Hawaiian surf history.
The bottom side features an inscription of the Hawaiian prayer for surf. So the board can be displayed in two different ways.
The amazing addition is the signatures. It is signed by Gerry Lopez, Reno Abellira, and Duke Aipa.
It has been showing on exhibit at the International Surf Museum in Huntington Beach as part of an ongoing Hawaiian History exhibit focusing on Duke. It was also shown on Monday Night Football.
Perfect for collectors, surf enthusiasts, and those looking to add authentic surf art to their space, this board can be wall-mounted as a statement piece or showcased in a gallery setting.
These painted surfboards are collaborations with other shapers. They come as traditional foam and glass boards or beautiful hand built custom ancient Hawaiian designs called Alaias. The alias are built with different woods. Redwood, cedar, old growth Sequoia and Paulownia are some of the wood types commonly used. Then I choose a theme, usually based off of a location such as California, Hawaii, or specific locales like Malibu, LA, or the mountains
